For centuries, scholars, artists, writers, scientists and film-makers have found inspiration in London’s famous sights—the city’s iconic Big Ben and Tower Bridge. London’s long history has given rise to its unique character. Around the splendid, historic centre of the ancient City and its old streets, there’s a bustling, welcoming modern city. London is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, with a vibrant and cosmopolitan community. Home to many great universities, it has some 300,000 students, almost a quarter of the city’s population, who come from all over the planet. In London, you’re never far away from greenery and parks. There are parks, gardens and commons throughout the city, which is also surrounded by lovely countryside.

Currency
The United Kingdom uses the British Pound Sterling (£). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, including contactless payments. Cash is rarely required.
Power Outlets
The UK uses Type G power outlets with a voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travelers from Europe, the US, and other regions will need a plug adapter and possibly a voltage converter.
Medication
Pharmacies (Chemists) are widely available. Some operate 24 hours. Visitors should bring sufficient prescription medications with documentation. Over-the-counter medicines are readily available; stronger medications require a UK prescription.
Visa and Entry
Visa-free entry is available for citizens of many countries, including the EU, United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan, for short stays. Air Travel
London is served by multiple international airports: • Heathrow Airport (LHR) – the main international hub, approx. 25 km from central London • Gatwick Airport (LGW) • Stansted (STN) • Luton (LTN) • London City Airport (LCY) Heathrow Express reaches Paddington Station in ~15 minutes. The Underground (Piccadilly Line), Elizabeth Line, taxis, Uber, and trains also provide easy access to the city.
Train Travel
Major rail stations include King’s Cross, Paddington, Waterloo, and Victoria. High-speed Eurostar services connect London with Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam.
Biking in London
London has expanding cycling infrastructure. Santander Cycles and other bike rentals are available throughout the city. Helmets are recommended but not mandatory.
Public transport
The Tube is the fastest way to travel across London, operating from ~5:00 AM to midnight (24-hour service on some lines Fridays and Saturdays). London’s iconic red buses operate 24/7 on many routes and are a convenient option for short trips.
Payment
Contactless debit/credit cards and mobile payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay) are widely accepted. Oyster Cards are also available.
